History

Meiji Karl – The Pioneer of Japanese Puffed Snacks

Meiji Karl was born on July 25, 1968, making it one of Japan’s very first puffed snacks. At the time, the idea of “snacks = sweet” was deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Karl broke this tradition by introducing a savory snack that could be enjoyed all year round and satisfy small cravings, offering Japanese families an alternative to popcorn.

Karl initially launched with two flavors: “Cheese,” aimed at children, and “Chicken Soup,” designed as a snack for adults to enjoy with drinks. In 1969, the “Curry” flavor was added, further expanding the lineup. In 1971, noticing that the cheese flavor was less popular in the Kansai region, Karl developed the “Usuaji” (Lightly Salted) flavor—a blend based on bonito stock with added kelp for extra umami—tailored to local tastes. The packaging featured traditional Japanese colors to reflect its dashi-inspired flavor. Today, both “Cheese” and “Usuaji” have become Karl’s classic flavors.

In 1975, the iconic little boy character first appeared on the packaging, becoming a beloved symbol of the brand and deepening Karl’s connection with generations of Japanese consumers. With its unique crispy texture and rich Japanese-inspired flavors, Meiji Karl remains a favorite on Japanese e-commerce sites and in supermarkets, creating delicious memories for people of all ages.

Whether as an everyday snack or for sharing at gatherings, Meiji Karl continues to accompany countless families with its spirit of innovation and timeless flavors.
